I was one of the first to try the FreeSip Tumbler, which combines two of the brand's bestselling designs.
HuffPost Staff
I had the opportunity to try out both of these brand-new options for myself and I truly believe drinking perfection has officially been achieved.
The lead- and BPA-free FreeSip, which is arguably Owala’s best-known water bottle design, rose to fame namely because it allowed drinkers to either sip or swig using the clever dual-mouth spout that conceals a non-folding and easy-to-clean drinking straw. Its stainless steel and triple-insulated construction were further supplemented by the fact the FreeSip is completely leakproof thanks to a push-button locking lid and keeps contents cold for extended periods.
It also wasn’t without its faults. Depending on which size you had, the FreeSip’s base was too big to fit in most car cup holders and a little clunky to hold. It was also lacking a handle, which was one of the main deciding factors for my purchasing the Owala straw tumbler early last year, a design that I absolutely love but it’s not completely leakproof.
But the new 40-ounce FreeSip Tumbler addresses all of those prior qualms by incorporating a slimmer cup holder-friendly silhouette and a generous ergonomic handle. Plus, the double-threaded lid means you can drink with the handle on either the right or left side of the tumbler.
Another subtle but meaningful improvement is that this new iteration has a dedicated locking switch on the lid, so you can toss this tumbler in your bag or backpack without any potential risk of something accidentally hitting the push button that opens the drinking spout. I can literally hold this tumbler upside down, shake it, or throw it on its side, and not one drop of liquid is escaping. While the FreeSip Tumbler is definitely my favorite of Owala’s fresh additions, it’s also not the only new design the company launched. The FreeSip Sway is a 30-ounce bottle boasting the same iconic dual-sip spout, the new slimmer base and locking lid, plus a useful bucket handle, so it’s never been easier to tote your drink around. I can even slide it into the water bottle sleeve of my favorite travel totes with ease.
Part of Owala’s Target launch means that both of the new designs come in color combinations that are completely exclusive to Target and are unavailable anywhere else, including Owala’s official site. The FreeSip Tumbler comes in four colors, while the FreeSip Sway comes in eight, including a punchy tangerine and a soft baby blue.
It’s hard to say how fast these new designs will fly off shelves, but based on our past observation it seems like the chances are high. Head to Target now to claim your perfect Owala water bottle.
"I own many tumblers, and this one is different, but I like it! I like the option to sip or gulp. The lid being locked and leakproof is good! I recommend you get it!" —Tallbrown
"Glad I got this! I haven't tested the ice holding, but the cup/lid/leakproof all works nicely. Love the handle." —Dress
"Obsessed. This is the perfect water bottle. I have a 24oz. Owala, but it isn’t enough water, and it’s the only one that fits in a cup holder. More water, the amazing free sip lid, gorgeous colors, and fits a cup holder - perfection." —Lex
"10/10!!! My previous 40oz. Owala didn’t fit in my cup holders, and it’s like they listened! The new Slim bottom is perfect for cup holders. I love the locking mechanism; I can throw it into my backpack without having to worry. I love the Free Sip because the mouthpiece is covered while I’m at work in the hospital! This is the PERFECT work cup!" —Janne
